Vulcan afternoon, Thunderbolt evening...

Helping out with the 'follow-up' photo shoot event for the one abandoned due to inclement weather in October 2020, I spent the first couple of hours 'stewarding' the access for photographers into the cockpit of Avro Vulcan B.2A XJ824 in Airspace. The cockpit was illuminated with a couple of lights which didn't really help with the iPhone snaps I took...
It was March 1982 when XJ824 landed for the last time at Duxford and it is the 40th anniversary year of Operation Blackbuck during the Falklands War.

Later, the event repositioned outside and I had the opportunity to grab a few photos as the sun set behind Hangar 3 and later when Republic P-47 Thunderbolt 'Nellie B' was positioned for a night run.

Biggin Hill's Mustang option...

FlyaSpitfire.com at Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar have announced that passenger flights in their recently acquired P-51D Mustang 44-13779/WDC are now available.

This P-51D (C/N 122-40417 S/N 44-73877) was constructed in 1944 but did not see combat in WW2. In 1951 it was transferred to the RCAF and SOC in 1958 after which it went through several different owners.

Until its current scheme of 44-13779/WDC of 4th FG/335th FS, the personal aircraft of Col. Don Blakeslee commanding officer of the 4th FG, it was painted up as a Mustang IV, of No.112 Sqdn. KH774 GA-S (44-11602), flown by Lt Blanchford 6/5/45 and nicknamed 'Sharkmouth'.

Prior to that, it wore the scheme of P-51D 44-14450 'Old Crow' for many years. 'Old Crow' was the personal aircraft of Colonel Bud Anderson of the 363rd FS/357th FG, a leading WW2 USAAF ace with 161⁄4 aerial victories.

The aircraft was fitted with a jump seat behind the pilot's seat in the space normally occupied by the 85 gallon fuel tank but is not fitted with the dual controls of the TF-51D.
