Apparently letting the kids loose with paints on MH434 has upset some readers over on the Flypast forum!

ML407 - an evolving story?

After I grabbed some shots of ML407 last week being "striped up" for the weekend, I asked my wife to pick a couple of copies of the book "2nd TAF Spitfire - The Story Of Spitfire ML407" from the stand at the airshow, as I was away for the weekend.

Having browsed through my copy I have linked the regular pilot of ML407, Johnnie Houlton, to some gun camera film clips I have viewed, mostly during June 1944. I'm not sure of the quality of the footage but it's all material connected to the history of ML407.

S/L John Niven appears in a few photos in the book during it's time on 485 Squadron and I have posted a copy of the book to the Niven family. Until recently, I don't think they realised that two of the aircraft John flew were still extant…

My search for others continues...

Duxford :: 18.V.14 :: Sunny Sunday...

Had a brother visiting over the weekend, and as it was such a nice day, we popped down to show him around and swell the coffers of Wing Co Joe's/The Mess.
Apart from all them airyplaney things there was an outing for Porsche 356 owners -

 As we sat for a cold drink at "Joe's" prior to departing, a Spitfire came into land, and I suggested he hotfoot it over to the barrier next to ATC, as it looked like it may be ML407. Sure enough, ML407 came taxiing by and he managed to catch some video of it.
Rounded off his visit nicely and he'll be showing the video to his friend, whose father flew ML407 in 1944, while it was with 485 (NZ) Sqdn., when he gets back up north….

70th Anniversary of that flight this coming August - next visit may be with John Niven's son, as AB910 is rolled out, and maybe a trip over to Bentwaters!...

Duxford :: 7.V.14 :: The end of the reel?

After almost eight years of watching gun camera film, I have watched my last reel (until they find some more!).
The last clip on the last reel, coincidentally dated the 7th….

Meanwhile, elsewhere…
Mk Vb AB910 tail nearing completion.
MH434 and Frankie just before being unleashed for exercise…

The invitation to take some closeup shots of these inside by OFMC staff was ruined in what can only be described as a basic schoolboy error - shooting 'arm-height' using the LCD screen without my reading glasses, while on manual focus, results in out of focus images.
D'oh…..

My Garden :: 1/4/14

The regular visit of AAC Apaches to Duxford is often reported on by others, but this crew obviously felt sorry for me today and spent a few minutes circling my 'base' - cheers lads!
