Unusual visitor to Duxford today - replica Fokker Dr1 Dreidekker - flew in 'escorted' by a Tiger Moth (if my spotting skills are up to scratch!).

RAF Mustangs...

It crossed my mind today as I sat watching gun camera footage from September 1944 that there are no RAF Mustangs I/II/III/IV flying in the UK today.
I have been watching quite a bit of RAF gun camera film from WWII and there has been a fair amount of Mustang footage. Today was 19 and 65 Squadron film. 19 Squadron (pictured above) were, of course, based at Duxford at one time.

So the Mustang was used quite a bit by the RAF - if my history is right the RAF were the first to use the new Mustangs operationally.

So maybe the time has come to have a nice RAF Mustang up in the wide blue yonder...

Quick Silver...

One of my favourite paint schemes on the P-51 is that of "Quick Silver", owned/operated by Bill and Scott Yoak.
It's not a specific paint scheme but one which pays tribute to those who served and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice...

Sadly, Bill Yoak passed away in 2013 after a long fight with cancer.

Had my post lunch Friday stroll and lots of cowlings were off for maintenance - not a lot flying today, Tiger Moths were doing a steady business between the showers...

Flying Proms

Went to the "Flying Proms" at Duxford last night. Bit of a last minute thing and so buying tickets on the gate was a pain due to the queue/slow service.

Still apart from a cold wind (it's almost the end of July FFS) the sky was clear. The John Miller band was there to open the evening playing all the fav Glen Miller tunes.

Flying display opened with the F-86 then P-51 (Ferocious Frankie) followed by a Schweizer chopper, Piper Cub pair, Spitfire, Guinot pair, DC-3 Dakota. The 'night glow' balloons were reduced to 'night glow burners' due to the wind.

The Spitfire display opened with the stirring theme from The Battle Of Britain and cheers from the audience. Certainly stirring stuff...



After the closing fireworks seems some crops were ignited (stray firework?) to the south of the runway.

Duxford post lunch bimble

Having lunched, I had a walk around today to see what was left after last weekend. Sally B looked a little forlorn now that her 'sisters in arms' had departed back to their respective homes. At least she had a 'little friend', P-51 Old Crow, to keep her company for now.

News is that Liberty Belle is now back in North America having arrived at Bangor earlier this evening.
Also still resident at Duxford is the Scandinavian Historic Flights A-26B Invader...
And Miss Helen is inside with what looks like a temporary u/c leg on the port side after her mishap last Sunday...

Ed Shipley with his recent 'charge' spending some time with the UK/Europe members of the AirShowBuzz.com website before flying commenced at Flying Legends 07 at IWM Duxford.

After all the miles and hours Miss Velma is towed out for a quick photo sortie. The exhaust stains spoiling her otherwise nice appearance.

Miss Velma - nearly there

After travelling from the USA across the Atlantic via Greenland, Iceland and Scotland, TF-51 Miss Velma with Ed Shipley at the controls covers the last few miles to Duxford. Ed was kind enough to overfly my house on the last leg...

This was the culmination of the Operation Bolero II - the attempt to bring the P-38 Glacier Girl to the UK finally after her years under the ice and snow in Greenland. Miss Velma managed to finish the trip alone after GG suffered radiator problems as she set off on the first over water leg to Greenland.
So she remains behind, to hopefully make the historic journey next year - Op Bolero III?

About Warbirdskies

"Warbirdskies" came about as a place to record my interest in warbird aviation. I live to the north of Duxford airfield and often the aircraft from there use the airspace above and around my home to carry out air tests and practice aerobatics. The sound of V-12s and radial engines can be heard for some distance and warbirds pass nearby en route to/from airshows/events to the north on many occasions. 

The choice of a North American P-51B, or as it was in RAF service a "Mustang III",  for my page banner is due to me having a soft spot for the 'razorback' Mustangs with the Malcolm hood in RAF service. 

The birth (and development) of the P-51 Mustang is intertwined with British involvement - without the British need for more fighters during the early stages of WW2, NAA might not have had the chance to build the P-51. 

The first operational Mustangs were in RAF service with 26 Squadron. 

With the British suggestion to replace the Allison with a Merlin, due to the poor high altitude performance of the Allison, the Mustang was transformed into the fighter it became.

So, from the "Mustang I" through to the "Mustang IVa", it carried out an important and often neglected role. 

Recently, the UK has had a "Mustang IV" grace our skies in the form of KH774/GA⦿S 112 Sqn (formerly P-51D 44-73877 "Old Crow") - so the RAF roundel (with fearsome sharks mouth) can be seen on the "Cadillac Of The Skies"...

50 year anniversary flight

Today I celebrated the 50th anniversary of my first flight in a DC-3/C-47 operated by Silver City Airways.
My family were relocating from Kent to the far north of Scotland when my father got a job in the site architect office at the new UKAEA power station being constructed at Dounreay, Caithness.

We flew from Lydd aerodrome, Kent, stopping for fuel at Prestwick before continuing onto Wick airport.

50 years and a couple of months on, I celebrated the occasion with a flight in G-AMPY operated by Classic Flight/Air Atlantique at Coventry Airport. G-AMPY was wearing her RAF Transport Command livery and her original serial number KK116
